Protest In Atlanta

A long line of African Americans picket outside Rich's Department Store, Atlanta, Georgia, in protest against segregated eating facilities at one of its lunch counters.

October 19 - Atlanta, GA - Under the direction of SNCC members, Lonnie King and Julian Bond, and with the assistance of Dr. King, students organized a protest against Rich's restaurant.   A number of protestors are arrested including Dr. King.   He is originally sentenced to four months at Reidsville State Penitentiary but with the support and involvement of John F. and Robert Kennedy, King is released. (Some historians argue that this show of support significantly increased the black vote for Kennedy and led to his subsequent election)
