May 17 - Washington, DC - The United States Supreme Court ruled in the Oliver Brown, et al v. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas that "racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional." This decision reversed the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson "separate but equal" decision.
