Born in Nashville, Tennessee on August 5, 1924
Lillie Virginia Drake Bowman was the only girl in family of four children born to Brown H. Drake, and Virginia E. Drake. Mrs. Bowman was reared by her mother until she was sixteen. At that time, sadly, her mother passed away and she and her brothers went to live with their father. Witnessing the effects of the Depression, her parents really emphasized education. It was no surprise that she went on to pursue a degree in Business Education and Administration at Tennessee State University (TSU). In addition, she received a MS in Educational Guidance from TSU and master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Chicago.
She avidly supported the demonstrations, boycotts, and protests during the Civil Rights Movement. Furthermore, Mrs. Bowman dedicated most of her career to guidance counseling, as she worked for over thirty years in the Nashville Public School System, most of which was spent in the position of Guidance Counselor and Department Chair at McGavock High School from 1972 – 1992. Currently, Mrs. Bowman is retired and still resides in Nashville.VIDEO CLIPS
