ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
FEATURING NVLP VISIONARY:
Faith Ringgold
TOPIC: The Black Artist’s Role in Today’s African American Community – Activist? – Educator? – Businessperson? – All/None Of The Above?”
| Originally Webcast on September 15, 2004 |
Acclaimed artist, author, educator and NVLP Visionary Faith Ringgold is a legendary pioneer in the world of African American fine art. For more than four decades, Ms. Ringgold has broken down barriers and forged new artistic forms to boldly express her unique vision. In her work, she has used painting, sculpture, textiles and performance art to articulate strong political and social convictions, as well as quilt work and children’s books to tell distinctive stories of African American history and family culture.
Ms. Ringgold joins a live audience to engage in a candid dialogue about many aspects of her work, especially her story quilts and children’s books. Beyond this, the discussion will examine the role and responsibilities of the African American artist in today’s society -- in the classroom and community; in the art marketplace and on the political stage.
