ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
FEATURING NVLP VISIONARY:
ODETTA
Originally Web cast on April 20 2004
TOPIC: Who Sings My Song?
Singer, activist and NVLP Visionary Odetta is a living legend in the world of folk music. During the Civil Rights movement, her traditional songs were rooted in the struggle for freedom and established her as a unique and distinct voice. Odetta joined a live audience to reflect on her career, and to engage in a candid talk about the link between black music and social or political activism – then and now.

During the first part of the two-hour Roundtable, members of the intergenerational audience, limited to 20 guests, were able to question Odetta one-on-one.
In the second part of the Roundtable, she was joined by a small, varied group of panelists, including Dr. Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey In The Rock and Toni Blackman, poet, hip-hop artist and educator .
This roundtable discussion marked the latest in a series of intimate, intergenerational
dialogues with NVLP Visionary Elders. All discussions are held at NVLP headquarters
(1218 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036), and are moderated by Renee
Poussaint, NVLP Co-Founder and Executive Director.
