ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
FEATURING NVLP VISIONARY:
Bishop
Barbara Harris
Topic: Change For The Future: The Church, Youth
and Society
Religious leader, civil rights activist
and NVLP Visionary Bishop Barbara Harris holds the distinction
of being the first ordained female bishop of the United States Episcopal
Church. Bishop Harris has been a force of change for women, people of
color, and the poor around the world. She remains today what she has
always been an activist critic of the status quo who constantly strives
to break new ground.
This
roundtable discussion focused on the future of the church:
-
Should the church maintain its traditional standards or make changes
that
reflect its communities?
- How
can the church best speak to the hearts and minds of young people
eagerly searching for real answers and results?
- What
is the role of the gay community in the church?
- Separation
between Church and State?
During
the first part of the 90 minute Roundtable, members of the intergenerational
audience, limited to 20 guests, discussed these issues with Bishop Harris
one-on-one.
In
the second part of the Roundtable, two panel members joined Bishop Harris
expanding the discussion and offering other points of view.
This
roundtable discussion marked the latest in a series of intimate, intergenerational
dialogues with NVLP Visionary Elders. All discussions were held at NVLP
headquarters (1218 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Renee Poussaint,
NVLP Co-Founder and Executive Director, moderated the discussion.
