Dr. John Hope Franklin
Recorded on March 14, 2003
TOPIC: Affirmative Action: On the Ropes
or Down For The Count

in the landmark University of Michigan cases, Dr. John Hope Franklin,

Dr. Franklin
and a select panel examined why Affirmative Action was created, and how well
the policy has withstood the test of time. Is Affirmative Action still necessary?
What alternatives are being proposed? Would minority achievement suffer or
be enhanced if Affirmative Action ceased to exist?
During the first part of the two-hour Roundtable, members of the intergenerational
audience, limited to 20 guests, questioned Dr. Franklin one-on-one.
In the second part of the Roundtable, he joined a small, but varied group
of panelists.
This roundtable discussion marked the latest in a series of intimate, intergenerational
dialogues with NVLP Visionary Elders. All discussions are held at NVLP headquarters
(1218 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036), and are moderated by Renee
Poussaint, NVLP Co-Founder and Executive Director.
