ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION FEATURING NVLP VISIONARY: Dr.
David C. Driskell
Originally
Webcast Friday, January 17, 2003
TOPIC: What is the status of the African
American artist today, and what can tomorrows artists expect?
Artist, scholar, author, collector and curator, Dr. David
C. Driskell is a pioneering figure in the world of African American art.
Dr. Driskell joined a live audience for a candid talk about the commercial
health of the African American artist and the survival of college-level arts
education. Why are so many Fine Arts programs, disappearing or losing funding
at schools like Howard University? What does this mean for the next generation
of artists? How visible and how viable are African Americans in todays
fine arts marketplace?

During the first
part of the two-hour Roundtable, members of the intergenerational audience,
limited to 20 guests, questioned Dr. Driskell one-on-one.
In the second part of the Roundtable, he was joined by a small, but varied
group of panelists, including emerging artist Jefferson Pinder from
the University of Maryland.
This roundtable discussion marks the latest in a series of intimate, intergenerational
dialogues with NVLP Visionary Elders. All discussions are held at NVLP headquarters
(1218 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036), and are moderated by Renee
Poussaint, NVLP Co-Founder and Executive Director.
