ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
FEATURING NVLP VISIONARY:
Sister Mary Alice Chineworth
Recorded April 3, 2003
TOPIC: The Church In The Black Community: Which
Way From Here?
Sister Mary Alice Chineworth, religious leader, educator, and NVLP
Visionary, has dedicated 64 years of service to the Catholic Church.
An active member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore, MD,
she remains devoted to the education and welfare of the African American
community.
Sister
Chineworth headlined an insightful roundtable discussion on the
role of the church in the black community, at a time when families and
leaders are desperately seeking solutions to today's problems.
- Does
the church still fulfill its dynamic and historic role in community
affairs?
- In what
ways can religious institutions work with other faiths as well as
secular organizations to serve the community?
- How
can the church best speak to the hearts and minds of young people
eagerly searching for real answers and results?
During
the first part of the two-hour Roundtable, members of the intergenerational
audience, limited to 20 guests, discussed these issues with Sister
Mary Alice Chineworth one-on-one.
In the second part of the Roundtable, Imam Mahdi Bray, President
of the Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations, and Roxanne
L. Lawson, journalist and community activist, joined Sister Chineworth
in the discussion.
This roundtable discussion is part of a series of intimate, intergenerational
dialogues with NVLP Visionary Elders. All discussions are held at NVLP
headquarters (1218 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036), and are moderated
by Renee Poussaint, NVLP Co-Founder and Executive Director.
